There is archaeological evidence of human habitation on the territory of what is today's Czech Republic dating back to the early Palaeolithic Age. The Slavs first came here probably in the late 5th and early 6th century. Social diferentiation and defence needs gave rise, in the 7th century, to the first political entities: Samo's Empire – in essence a union of Slav tribes led by the Frankish trader early feudal state of Czechs and Slovaks (first half of the 9th century). It was soon major imperial powers – the Franks and the Byzantines. Threatened by Frankish raids, the Moravian prince Rostislav sought the protection of the Byzantine Empire and asked Constantinople to send in Christian mission. In around 863 AD, the Christian messengers Cyril and Methodius reached Moravia, their activity there assisting the penetration of Byzantine cultural influences, turning the Great Moravian Empire into an early centre of Slav education. By that time, society had already been well differentiated, with the first feudal elements apparent in production relations. The Empire reached its heyday in the first half of the 9th century, under Prince Svatopluk. However, his successor failed to prevent the Empire from disintegration. Although it succeeded in surviving several East Frankish invasions. It finally succumbed to Hungarian raids at the beginning of the 10th century.
