North-western Bohemian city of Usti nad Labem (Aussig an der Elbe), situated in a mountainous landscape at the confluence of Bilina and Labe rivers, is an important railway junction and an active river port. First mentioned as a trading centre as early as 993, the town of Usti nad Labem was founded by Otakar II, the King of Bohemia in the late 13th century. During the long period of its development, Usti nad Labem was changing its overall shape and form. Originally a town of craftsmen and merchants, the city (with river transport, mining and chemical industry as its most important assets) was heavily industrialized and became one the most important transportation nodes of Bohemia during the second half of the 19th century. And the form and the shape of the city undoubtedly reflected that new role... Today's Usti nad Labem is the industrial city with chemical establishments, metallurgy manufacture, machinetool industries, textiles and nutriment industry and with population of 94000 inhabitants is the 9th most populous city in the Czech Republic.
