Welcome to the Town of
Trebon

Southern Bohemia Region of Czech Republic

(approx. 132 kilometers from Prague)

South-Bohemian Trebon Spa town is situated halfway between Ceske Budejovice and Jindrichuv Hradec, in the middle of a lowland area called the Trebon Basin, in the heart of a natural protected area and a UNESCO biosphere reservation. The character and economic orientation of the Trebon district were predestined by natural conditions and the activities of the people who have been settling here since the 11th century. The origins of the charming town of Trebon, which spreads out in the midst of fishpond plains, date from about the middle of 12th century when a small market settlement was established on a path running through deep border forests. The fact that the place must have been first cut and cleared (or 'refined') probably gave this settlement its name Trebon (from the word 'tribit' - to refine). In 1366, the noble brothers of Rozmberk became the new owners of the town and the surrounding lands and Trebon became an important and wealthy town. The brothers of Rozmberk founded a monastery in Trebon the following year, and in 1376 the town was granted the rights of a Royal Free City. In 1378 a Royal privilage concerning imports of salt was granted to the Trebon town by the Czech King, Charles IV. By the end of the 14th century, Trebon had a chateau, strong walls and a moat, so Trebon was a town very difficult to conquer. 2nd half of the 15th century was the period of the greatest growth for the Trebon town. Petr IV of Rozmberk seriously began to take care of the land. One of his subjects, Štěpánek Netolický made the district renowned as a fishpond farming area. The foundation of a new brewery in 1505 was another significant occurance. 16th century and the beginning of 17th century saw the greatest years of prosperity for the Trebon town, especially under the rule of the last two Lords of Rozmberk, the brothers Vilem and Petr Vok. Much attention was paid to the economic development of the whole estate, particularly the fishpond farming and the brewery. The natural disposition of the Trebon basin provided a good opportunity for the founding of numerous new fishponds on a larger scale and this resulted in an enrichment of the whole economy of this area.

The spa and the tourist industry have devoloped dramatically in recent years, greatly affecting the look and character of the Trebon town, so it is an ideal place for relaxation, rest, entertainment etc.
