Rokycany town with a population of 15000 inhabitants is situated at the confluence of Padrtsky and Borecky creeks, under the Brdy Hills, 362 meters above sea level, 12 kilometers eastern of Plzen (Pilsen) City. The town is surrounded by beautiful hills - Cilina, Kotel, and also Zdar, which is the topic of many legends and which was once the site a walled-in Celtic settlement. Rokycany town can be reached on the motorway D5 or by the railway line Prague-Pilsen-Bavaria. Rokycany ranks among the ancient towns, being mentioned for the first time in the Chronicle of Bohemia by Cosmas in 1110. In 1404 Rokycany was raised to town and in 1584 to royal town by Emperor Rudolph II. Modern history of the town starts with its liberation by the American Army on 7 May, 1945. Of historical importance is the fact that two great armies of the anti-German coalition, the American Army and the Soviet Army, met in Rokycany for the fist time on 10 May, 1945. A memorial erected on the demarcation line between Borek and Rokycany in 1996 commemorates this event. Many outstanding people were born in Rokycany, such as Master Jan of Rokycany, Archbishop of Prague, the humanist poet Jakub Optalius of Trebnice, the violoncello player Antonin Kraft, physician Josef Cejka (close friend of the writer Bozena Nemcova) or burgmaster Jaroslav Heyrovsky... The center of Rokycany was declared as urban protected zone in 1992. There are currently 45 immovable cultural monuments on the terriotry of the town.
