Welcome to the City of
Plzen

Western Bohemia Region of Czech Republic

(approx. 90 kilometers from Prague)

Plzen (Pilsen) is the 4th largest city in the Czech Republic. It's located in western Bohemia. Pilsen is a significant Czech industrial, commercial, cultural, and administrative center. The city was founded by the Czech King Wenceslas II in 1295 on the confluence of 4 rivers - Uhlava, Uslava, Radbuza and Mze. Situated on the crossroads of 2 important trade routes and close to Prague, the city of Pilsen experienced an immediate rapid growth. Nowadays, the Plzen metropolitan area covers 125 square kilometers and its population is 165000 inhabitants.

The rich cultural and economical standard of life in Plzen is particularly enhanced by its heritage. In 1989, the ancient town center was declared a historical landmark to be carefully preserved. The rich architectural jewels here include Gothic St. Bartholomew's Cathedral, Renaissance City Hall, Baroque reconstruction of the Archdeacon's house and Franciscan Monastery, and the recently re-opened Great Synagogue of Plzen. Many public buildings in Plzen, such as the City Theatre, Museum, the Burgher Hall or houses with Mikolas Ales's sgraffiti, date back to the 19th century.

Pilsner Urquell - Worlds Most Famous Beer
The Pilsen brewery produces the Pilsner Urquell (Plzensky Prazdroj) and Gambrinus brands of beer. Pilsner Urquell's management headquarters and the Visitors' Centre form part of the large, historic premises.
The brewery's courtyard, Plzensky Prazdroj (Pilsner Urquell) brew house and part of the ancient brewery cellars form a tour route which every year attracts tens of thousands of tourists from the Czech Republic and abroad. Even today, Pilsner Urquell is still produced in the brewery cellars following the traditional methods and experienced brewers compare the beer from wooden barrels with the beer that is fermented in the modern cylindrical-conical tanks. Not only will you learn about the brewery's history and unique technology used to produce Pilsner Urquell, but you can also taste the beer from wooden barrels directly in the cellars.
