Welcome to the Town of
Mseno

Central Bohemia Region of Czech Republic

(approx. 50 kilometers from Prague)

Mseno town stands guard over the Kokorinsko Natural Preserve, lying on its eastern border, on the boundary of the Melnik, Mlada Boleslav and Ceska Lipa Countys. The Kokorin region is a sylvan land, abundant in rock formations, glens and romantic corners and thus it is no wonder that its particularly attractive landscape and pristine environment make it a frequently sought-after location. This is mainly due to its dense cobweb of tourist trails and cycle tracks, as these offer some real picturesque views of wooden architecture in good repair. And not only that, the several dispersed chateaus and fortified castles also draw a great deal of tourist attention.

Mseno town lies in a moderately undulating landscape, on the very edge of an agricultural region located in the central part of the Jizera plain, churned up by numerous long and mostly waterless hollows. The town occupies a summit of a flat mound, which shelves down northwards into a relatively precipitous trench harboring sandstone glens. In these there are several ponds dispersed within. Mseno seems to have originated far back in the past, as its locality adjacent to the significant Slavonic stronghold called Hradsko near Kanina suggests. Its contemporary parish church is alleged to have replaced the former Romanic St. Wenceslas church. The first known reference to the village of Mseno dates from 1348. In the course of the 13th century, Mseno holds a landowner's property position - the year of 1304 settles the village onto the hands of Hynek, the lord of Duba, as a dispensation granted to him by Wenceslas II. As early as 1352, Mseno is referred to as a market town with church. Later the town undergoes a separation into two parts - the regnal and the manorial (with a stronghold), which did not unify their properties until late 1621. Preceding to the Hussite wars, Mseno had already enjoyed in abundance of privileges - these were extended in 1545.
