The royal town of Melnik was founded in the 13th century. One of Melnik's dominanting features is a castle of the Lobkowitz lineage - there is a gallery with the contemporary furniture and paintings of famous masters at the Castle, and regular wine tastings take place in its large medieval cellars. During the 30 Years War, the Melnik Castle was abandonned. In the year 1646 Count Czernin started a major reconstruction and had the Early Barroque southern wing added. The heiress of the Czernin family, Countess Ludmila Czernin, married in 1753 Prince August Anton Lobkowicz. With the exception of the World War II and the 40 years of communist rule, Melnik Castle remained in the Lobkowicz family. Jiri Lobkowicz, the present owner is renovating the Castle since 1992.
The most famous church of Melnik is the Church of St. Peter and Paul with its unique multicoloured decoration of the gothic vault of presbytery and one of the most interesting charnel buildings in the Czech Republic.
There is a seat of the Regional Museum of Melnik in the building of the former monastery, which shows the medieval town, interiors of town and village houses and everyday life of villagers with examples of the historical architecture. Wonderful view of the town, the confluence of Labe and Vltava rivers, the memorable Rip Hill and Central Bohemia is available from the tower gallery in the Prague Gate.
