City of Hradec Kralove (Königgrätz, Koeniggraetz) lies in the north-eastern Bohemia. It's situated on a fertile plain at the confluence of the Labe and Orlice rivers. Hradec Kralove is surrounded by wooded rolling hills and farmland to the north-west and a vast forest complex borders the urban fringe to the south-east. The history of Hradec Kralove stretch back to medieval times - the first record of Hradec Kralove as a town dates back to 1225. Hradec Kralove was founded as the royal fortress town and had become the centre of East Bohemia in the Middle Ages. City of Hradec Kralove did not loose its importance in any of the following historical periods - eg.: the town has been a dowry gift to Czech queens, important centre of the Hussite movement, later as the seat of Bishop, as a military fortress in 19th century, and the site of the decisive battle in the Austrian-Prussian War of 1866. Town's unique collection of historical sights and structures consists of Gothic, Rennaisance and Baroque monuments. Hradec Kralove also takes pride in its modern architectural monuments from the 20th century. The masterpieces of such architects as Josef Gocar or Jan Kotera contributed greatly to Hradec Kralove was guven the title 'Salon of the Republic' during its economic and architectural development at the beginning of 20th century. With the population of almost 100000 inhabitants and the area about 105.6 square kilometers Hradec Kralove is among a 10 of the Czech Republic’s largest cities. From both historical and modern points of view it's a significant administrative, cultural, social, political and spiritual centre of Eastern-Bohemian region and one of two (with Pardubice) central cities' residential agglomeration.
