Welcome to the Town of
Hlinsko

Eastern Bohemia Region of Czech Republic

(approx. 120 kilometers from Prague)

Hlinsko (population: 10500 inhabitants) is situated in the Bohemian-Moravian Highlands on the border of the protected countryside area Iron Mountains and Zdar Hills. The first inhabitants settled in the slightly elevated area over the Chrudimka river as far back as the 12th century, historically documented by a written report dating back to year 1349. Until the 19th century, Hlinsko shared the fortunes of the lords of Pardubice and Rychmburk. This connection with the lords of Pardubice is commemorated in the town Coat of Arms, half of a white stepping horse with a blue bridle on a red background. The main livelihood of the inhabitants here was agriculture, pottery and cottage weaving. Hlinsko gained town status in 1834. An important dividing line in the history of the city came in 1871 with the construction of the railway from Pardubice to Havlickuv Brod, which transformed the agricultural and handicraft town into an industrial city. It was mainly the textile and fur industries, which made a huge entry here and experienced a great boom. Both soon gained renown and an important position on the European and overseas markets. The stone industry also developed successfully along with machine building, brewing and the dairy industry.
Some of the most important architectural monuments in the Hlinsko are the Baroque City Hall that dates back to 1788, the Baroque Church of the Birth of Our Lady that dates back to 1730–1745 with a rare font dating back to 1628, Jezik's House that dates back to 1904 and is decorated with sgraffito depicting the king Jiri of Podebrady and the victory of the Hlinsko people over the Swedes as well as the complex of the early Baroque Church of St. Peter and Paul from the end of the 17th century, the wooden bell tower dating back to 1804 and cross with folk relief work from 1835 in the local district of Chlum. The most important collection of historical buildings in Hlinsko is to be found in the Betlem monument reservation of the folk architecture, which documents the method of housing and lifestyle of the inhabitants here from the 18th century to the beginning of the 20th century.
Hlinsko is also famous for its industry. ETA electrical appliances, Rychtar beer, Tatra dairy products, luxury fur coats and leather clothes as well as products made by the local furniture companies have a permanent place on the market and are firmly associated with the name Hlinsko.
Thanks to its location and favourable conditions, the town of Hlinsko is the ideal place for summer and winter recreation. Tourists are served by several accommodation and catering facilities. Two slopes with artificial snow and evening skiing are much sought-after by fans of downhill skiing and there are treated cross-country runs near the city. In the event of adverse weather, visitors can use the services of the indoor swimming pool with sauna, solarium and fitness centre as well as a squash court. Sporting activities are also offered by the Olsinky Sports Centre where is located an indoor winter stadium covered with an in-line surface in summer, tennis courts, a volleyball court, multi-purpose playing field with artificial surface and a football stadium...
