North-Moravian Bruntal town is situated in the Moravian-Silesian Region near the border with Poland. Bruntál, with its population of approx. 18000 inhabitants is known as "the South-Eastern Gate to the Jeseniky Mountains". Bruntal was established towards the end of the 12th century due to the colonisation of the Jeseniky Mountain Region. Vladislav Jindrich, the Margrave of Moravia, granted municipal rights to Bruntal between 1210 and 1213. The rule of Bruntal later changed hands to the family of Opava Premysl, then the Bruntalsti z Vrbna family and finally the Order of Teutonic Knights. The prosperity of Bruntal town was closely associated with the mining of precious metals, as is shown by the oldest preserved municipal seal with a figure of a miner. The modern history of Bruntal is associated with the development of the textile industry during the first half of the 19th century. After World War II the population was mostly made up from resettled Czech and Slovak people. Bruntal town has two big parks - the Town park (founded round 1930) and the Chateau Park connected with the history of the Bruntal castle. The original Gothic castle, dating from the end of the 15th century, was separated from the town by a moat and a rampart. Its present form of a Renaissance Chateau residence (with a 61 meters high tower that dominates the town) was completed at the beginning of the 17th century. In the Chateau Park are placed the remains of the original fortifications and original sculptures from the early 20th century. Bruntal Chateau and Park are open to the public, but the park is opened only in the summer season.
